Lowell police warn residents ‘do not scan QR codes’


The Lowell Police Department is warning the community about a new type of package delivery scam that is targeting their residents.

There have been several reports of residents receiving packages they did not order from unknown senders, often from FedEx, UPS, or other package delivery companies. Opening the package reveals a note asking residents to scan a QR code to find out who sent it.

Lowell Police are warning the community not to scan QR codes from any packages they did not order. Once scanned the QR can be used to collect and steal personal information from residents’ phones.

“Brushing” scammers often use someone’s personal information to write fake reviews online in order to increase business profits. according to united states post office“Since the goods are generally cheap and low-cost to deliver, scammers see this as a profitable payment.” Despite getting free stuff, your personal information is available to scammers.

“This is a new type of scam that we have not seen before in the city of Lowell,” said Superintendent Greg Hudon of the Lowell Police Department in a statement. “We want to warn all residents not to scan QR codes if they receive an unwanted package, and we always encourage residents to contact Lowell Police if they think they may be receiving an attempt to scam them.” Got it.”
