Local organization provides access to sports for all children in the Las Vegas area

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A Las Vegas organization is leading the way to ensure equal access to sports for all children in the area. One reason children may not participate in sports is cost.

Giovanny Parra and Jonathan Pineda said that if they could play football every day they would do so.

For 10 and 11 year olds, it’s more than just a game.

“It’s a way for me to get my emotions out and calm down,” Pineda said.

“It’s dedicated to my life,” Parra said.

Both are dedicated to the field, working on juggling the ball like professionals.

This is an opportunity for the non-profit Greater Youth Sports Association. It provides after-school sports programs, particularly for children in disadvantaged areas, and partners with over 30 schools in the valley.

Its co-founder and former teacher Devonte Woodson said the game changed his life.

“For me personally, I didn’t get a chance to play sports until eighth grade,” Woodson said. “Sports in particular can provide a lot of positive benefits and with our program, not only do kids have the opportunity to play sports but they also get tutoring after school.”

Some of these students practice twice a week and also do an hour of school work. It’s a place for children to feel safe and gives them the opportunity to play sports that not everyone has.

The numbers show a serious need for after-school programs in Nevada. The Afterschool Alliance’s 2020 report shows that more than 214,000 children would participate in an afterschool program if one were available. That means for every child in an after-school program, there are three more waiting in the wings.

Volunteer coach Taylor Shimatsu-Silva said it should always be about the kids.

“It can be difficult sometimes, especially in these disadvantaged communities [and] Sometimes children are tough and don’t get enough support from their parents, Shimatsu-Silva said.

Many coaches are teachers who are always there on the field as their biggest cheerleaders.

“The relationships you build with those kids are incredibly rewarding,” he said.

It’s a group of kids and everyone has a different story.

Now using games to learn the importance of education, build character and life.

The Greater Youth Sports Association will host its Character Awards Night on May 8. It is an event honoring the more than 2,500 students who have participated in the program.

Colin Cowherd: Knicks are an unstable freak
Colin Cowherd: Knicks are an unstable freak

Watch Colin Cowherd FS1’s herd Explain why he thinks the New York Knicks’ lucrative playoff run will be short-lived, comparing it to the ‘fidget spinner’ as a vague fad that will disappear at any moment.

Check the above section As Collin takes his hat off to the Knicks for reaching their limit, but says their success is due more to the Eastern Conference’s depth weakness and the unrealistic burners of their guards.

Colin Cowherd: “You see things get very heated in society sometimes. Like a fidget spinner. And you’re wondering ‘how is it so popular?’ This is not sustainable. Just as the Rubik’s Cube was a type of mathematics; I got that. But fidget spinner – it cannot remain popular for so long. Eventually it dries up and nobody cares, and that’s how I feel about the New York Knicks.

How long can Jalen Brunson play like Michael Jordan? He has now scored more than 40 points in four straight games. How long until Josh Hart can double his offensive numbers in his career? He’s a ‘bounce-around-the-league’ guy and now he’s like a rebounding enthusiast and scoring machine. The Knicks had four people play more than 40 minutes – how long could this last? They don’t have any bench. They [the bench] Got blown out 46-3 last night and they keep winning. It’s the NBA version of a fidget spinner. How long is it durable?

Not that they don’t ‘deserve’ it…excellent fourth quarter offense, effort: excellent, rebounding: excellent, defense: committed, offensively they are a very intentional team. He has his limitations but he has very few bad possessions in the fourth quarter. You see teams waste possessions sometimes, but you don’t get any of that with the Knicks in the fourth quarter. It feels like that every time they come down: hustle, dedication, rebound, and it’s a deliberate possession. Sorry, Knicks fans, but typically: no bench, a leading scorer drafted in the second round, a bunch of Villanova guys, and hustle and effort are generally a range. We know his hustle and effort will matter in the regular season. If you work hard you can win 40 games in the NBA, if you have all the load management and talent with so many teams.

I’m really not surprised given the bad East they were a good regular season team. And some of it is that it stinks of the East. Indiana is the sixth seed, Tyrese Haliburton is not a star. He’s got good handles, but he got six points last night. It’s a fun team, and it’s a capable team in the East – their effort is incredible. But they have won five games in the playoffs and outscored their opponents by a total of five points. when will it end?”

Bally Sports is bringing back the “Legends Booth” for the Braves vs. Cardinals next Wednesday
Bally Sports is bringing back the “Legends Booth” for the Braves vs. Cardinals next Wednesday

Bally Sports knows how to appeal to Atlanta Braves fans.

Fresh off the success of their “Legends Booth” last seasonWhile the quarter of Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Chipper Jones and Jeff Francoeur pulled off a thrilling win over the New York Mets, Bailey Sports is running it back.

Next Wednesday, a special “players only” booth will host Atlanta’s contest against the Chicago Cubs. The four guys on the mic will be Jeff Francoeur, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones and former catcher Brian McCann, who retired after the 2019 season.

Of the four, McCann is the only one without formal broadcasting experience – he has been a special guest, but has not worked in a major league booth.

The first two iterations of the alternate broadcast, both coming in previous seasons, were interesting from a logistical standpoint because it featured four analysts in a booth and no play-by-play man. Francoeur, who was the lead analyst for Braves broadcasts at the time, took the lead on play-by-play, but the vibe was quite different – in a good way – from a traditional broadcast.

It also helps that Booth’s first iteration was an exciting game – the Braves swept the New York Mets in extra innings in a game that featured a total of 23 runs, nine home runs, four lead changes and a total of twelve pitchers taking the ball. . ,

It produced goods – Put Larry a crown! -And something else…unique home run call.

And next week, they’ll do it again. The Braves will face the Chicago Cubs at 7:20 pm ET.

New Patriots player responds to fan criticism after getting Rob Gronkowski’s No. 87
New Patriots player responds to fan criticism after getting Rob Gronkowski’s No. 87

USATSI

Michelle Wilcox There is a message for everyone new England Patriots Fans who have been giving him grief since the team gave him Rob Gronkowski’s Old number.

There aren’t many fan bases that are as passionate as the fans who live in New England, which is why it shouldn’t be a surprise that more than a few fans rallied behind Wilcox after the Patriots made him the No. 87 pick . To wear for the upcoming season. But the Patriots’ new tight end said he understands their anger.

“I’ll be the first one to say that Gronk’s (number) should definitely be retired,” Wilcox. written on x, “I had a Gronk poster in my room when I was growing up, so hats off to TE. Didn’t pick it, it’s what it is [the equipment team] It was for me and I’m grateful to be a part of (the organization).”

It’s odd that the Patriots would give number 87, especially to someone who plays the same position as Gronkowski. And though there may have been no thought to it, the Patriots assigning Gronkowski’s number could be a subtle message that a new era is underway in New England under the new head coach. jerod mayo,

Wilcox is correct in saying that Gronkowski’s number should be retired by the team. By all accounts, Gronkowski is considered one of — if not the -The greatest tight end of all time. He played an integral role in the Patriots’ most recent three Super Bowl wins during his nine-year tenure with the team.

While his number will be worn this year, it’s safe to say that Gronkowski’s No. 87 will one day join the seven numbers the Patriots have already retired. That number will increase to eight whenever the Patriots officially retire tom brady’s No. 12, which could be when the team honors his career for the second time this summer.

Diamond Sports in talks seeking to restructure retransmission fees
Diamond Sports in talks seeking to restructure retransmission fees

Over the past month, financially troubled Diamond Sports Group, the nation’s largest regional sports network, has been active in negotiating renewal of retransmission consent agreements with Comcast, the three largest pay-TV distributors.
Comcast
, Charter and DirecTV. A successful renewal would be beneficial to the financial fortunes of Diamond Sports as they work towards restructuring their core business after filing for Chapter 11 in March 2023. A bankruptcy hearing is scheduled for June 18.

According to sportico, the three MVPDs account for 81% of total affiliate revenues and, collectively, reach 38 million domestic customers. Furthermore, the three MVPDs account for approximately 69% of total traditional pay-TV households.

Charter: In a multiyear agreement announced in early April, Diamond Sports and Charter Communications renewed their distribution package. Under the new agreement, customers of Charter’s Spectrum TV Select Plus package can access Diamond’s channels and stream content on Bally’s Sports app. The previous agreement expired at the end of February and the RSN remained on air during renewal negotiations. Charter is the second largest pay-TV distributor with 13.5 million US subscribers.

DirecTV: A month later, Diamond Sports Group reached a renewal agreement with DirecTV, the third-largest pay-TV distributor. With the agreement, DirecTV customers with access to the Choice, Ultimate or Premier tiers will continue to have access to the RSN. Additionally, Bally Sports content can be streamed through their app. Additionally, any DirecTV or DirecTV STREAM customers without access to Diamond Sports will be able to purchase direct-to-consumer (DTC) products.

Also in early May, Diamond Sports reached a multi-year renewal agreement with Cox Communications, a small pay-TV distributor.

Comcast: Days before DirecTV’s announcement, renewal distribution negotiations with Diamond Sports and Comcast reached an impasse, resulting in the RSN being dropped from the nation’s largest PAT-TV distributor. The agreement expired last fall, but both sides agreed to a six-month extension without any resolution. Apart from cost, another negotiation issue is at what level the RSN channels will be located. Comcast wants premium tier channels with higher monthly costs which has gotten a push from Diamond Sports. For now, the blackout will only affect MLB games, along with playoff games in the NBA and NHL.

Amazon

Amazon
,
A court hearing on the Diamond Sports restructuring plan is scheduled for June 18 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston. One component of Diamond Sports’ restructuring strategy is a $115 million investment from Amazon that will provide a 15% ownership interest in RSN. As part of the deal, Amazon can invest an additional $50 million in the first nine months after bankruptcy protection. As the primary partner, Amazon Prime Video will be able to stream games from Diamond Sports.

front office sports According to reports, for the Amazon agreement to take effect, it would require the local media rights of the NBA and NHL franchises, which Diamond Sports had returned to the local teams, to be cancelled. The return of local media rights to the teams was made under the expectation that Diamond Sports would cease operations after the 2023–24 season. Therefore, it is uncertain what, if any, local games will be available on Amazon in the event the restructuring strategy is approved. There are reports that Diamond Sports has offered adjustments to a longer agreement, including “rights fee amendments” and digital rights.

According to athletic, If Diamond Sports’ restructuring with a streaming plan successfully emerges from bankruptcy, it could impact MLB’s direct-to-consumer strategy. In February, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced plans to launch an in-market streaming service, which would require approximately half of the 30 MLB teams to be successful. The planned DTC offering will be available across the country. A successful launch is based on the assumption that Diamond Sports will not successfully emerge from bankruptcy protection.

Currently, MLB is already slated to launch a streaming service by 2025 with nine teams potentially set to launch. There are three teams whose games are already being produced by MLB in 2024; Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres. Warner Bros. Discovery shut down its RSN operations, a decision that affected three more teams; Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners. The other three teams are in the final year of their agreements with Diamond Sports; Cleveland Guardians, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers.

In the event the Diamond Sports restructuring plans are approved, there will not be enough teams for MLB to launch a viable national direct-to-consumer strategy until at least 2025. At this time, a month before the hearing, most observers believe the bankruptcy court will approve the Diamond Sports restructuring plan.
