Google Doodle celebrates Paris 2024 Olympics

Google Doodle celebrates the start of the 2024 Paris Summer Games, which are set to begin today, July 26. The start of the Olympic Games is depicted with a beautiful illustration, in which animated characters are seen floating in the river. This illustration symbolizes the athletes walking along the Seine River, along which the opening ceremony is expected to take place.

The Paris Olympics 2024 is set to kick off with a spectacular opening ceremony that will begin at 11:00 pm on Friday, July 26, 2024, and end at 2:45 am (IST) on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Paris will see athletes from 200 countries competing in 329 events across 32 sporting disciplines. The event, which will end on August 11, is the 33rd edition of the quadrennial spectacle, and will feature four new sports, such as breaking, skateboarding, surfing and sports climbing.

Interactive Olympics features on Google

Doodler Helene Leroux and guest artist Chris O’Hara created today’s Olympic-themed Google Doodle, showcasing various sports through animation. In addition, it includes a “most searched-for playground” quiz inspired by “Where’s Waldo?”, designed to challenge users on their knowledge of legendary athletes, iconic sports, and the vibrant Parisian and Olympic culture.

Google Search will share real-time updates for all 329 events taking place over 19 days. Users can access the schedule, results, medal count, daily recap, top video highlights and all the latest stories and social media updates by scrolling through social media updates with the help of searches, specific countries, spots, athletes or general sports information.

Global and local broadcast coverage

In the United States, YouTube TV will broadcast NBC’s live coverage with a multiview option. Internationally, Clafro Sports will broadcast multiview on its YouTube channel in select countries in Latin America, while people in Brazil can watch CazeTV in Brazil. Mattel launches first-ever blind Barbie with cane and Braille packaging | Lifestyle
Mattel launches first-ever blind Barbie with cane and Braille packaging | Lifestyle

Mattel launches first blind Barbie

Introduced by Mattel in 1959, Barbie has been a favourite toy for millions of children around the world. It remains popular even today, with a variety of body types, skin colours and other features that better represent the world’s diverse population. The maker of the iconic doll has now taken a remarkable step towards inclusivity by launching its first blind Barbie doll, which is packaged in Braille. The packaging has the word ‘Barbie’ written in Braille.

Mattel has carefully designed it in collaboration with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), and has worked closely on every aspect of the doll, from its appearance to its packaging, to authentically represent individuals with blindness or low vision. The doll is equipped with a red and white cane, functional sunglasses, and a distinctive look that reflects the traits of many blind individuals.

The doll is dressed in a pink satin T-shirt and a purple tulle skirt, making it easy to dress and take off. The top has loop fasteners at the back and the skirt has an elastic waistband. The doll’s manufacturer has carefully tested the doll with children with low vision to ensure a suitable design for them to have an enjoyable play experience.

Lucy Edwards, a broadcaster and disability activist who lost her sight at the age of 17, was invited to promote the new doll. Speaking to the BBC, Edwards said, “I felt embarrassed by my cane, but seeing Barbie with a cane would have made me feel differently about my cane and made me feel less alone in accepting and embracing my blindness.”

Debbie Miller of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RBIB) praised this Barbie depicting visually impaired children

Mattel created this doll in partnership with RNIB, an organization representing blind people. Mattel faced criticism over the unrealistic proportions of its dolls and was found to be perpetuating conventional beauty standards. Barbie doll sales saw a decline and hence it started producing a diverse range of Barbies in 2016.

Along with the introduction of the first blind doll in the Barbie Fashionistas 2024 series, it has reestablished its relationship with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) and unveiled a new model called Black Barbie with Down Syndrome.

Goddess Parvati is said to have given birth to Ganesha from the turmeric paste she used to bathe with. When Lord Shiva did not recognise Ganesha, a fight broke out and Ganesha’s head was replaced with an elephant’s head as a sign of his unique divine presence.

What is grey divorce and what are its possible consequences? Know everything here | Lifestyle

After many years of marriage, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are making headlines as they attended Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding separately. Earlier, there were reports of Abhishek and Aishwarya’s separation.

Amid the ongoing speculation, the actor’s activity on social media has gone viral as he has liked a post discussing the challenges of divorce and the growing trend of ‘grey divorce’. This has again started discussions on whether the couple has split. But many wonder what the term ‘grey divorce’ means and what are its possible implications. Let’s find out the answer in this article.

What is ‘grey divorce’?

Grey divorce is a term that refers to divorce that happens later in life, usually after the 50s, when couples have spent many years together. People who separate after being together for so long are called silver splitters and getting divorced later in life can lead to financial difficulties apart from many other complications.

The incidence of gray divorce is rising rapidly. According to the Pew Research Center, 40 percent of all divorce cases in the United States over the past two decades involved individuals aged 50 or older. The rate of gray divorce has doubled since 1990 and the number has tripled for those over age 65.

Why are people separating after decades of married life?

Psychologist and marriage counsellor Shivani Misri Sadhu recently shared her views with Zee News Digital about the causes and possible effects of grey divorce:

Empty Nest Syndrome: When children leave home, couples realize they no longer have shared goals or interests, causing them to reevaluate their marriage.

Retirement: After retirement, couples start spending more time with each other and as a result, differences arise over how they want to live their lives in retirement.

Increase in life expectancy: Life expectancy rates are higher and people are living longer, so couples find themselves growing apart over time and seeking personal satisfaction in new ways.

Financial Freedom: Women today are more independent as they have their own career and all the financial resources, which provide them with the means to get out of an unsatisfactory marriage.

Changing Social Attitudes: Society is now more accepting of the concept of divorce, making it easier for older adults to consider this option.

Possible consequences of gray divorce

The decision to separate from your partner in later life comes with its own challenges and considerations. Here are some of the possible outcomes of grey divorce:

financial impact: The division of assets, particularly retirement funds, can be a complicated task and can impact the financial security of both parties. Alimony and spousal support are also considered.

Health care: Seniors have greater health care needs, and divorce can complicate insurance coverage and the division of health care responsibilities.

Emotional impact: Divorce at any age is emotionally problematic, especially for older couples who have been together for decades. The impact on adult children is also significant, as they may feel that the family has lost stability.

social change: Divorce can cause a change in social circles, as friends and family may begin to take sides or feel uncomfortable with newly single individuals. As a result, the newly single person begins to feel lonely and needs to build a new social network

Lifestyle Adjustment: Changes in living arrangements, such as leaving the family home, can be stressful and take some time to adjust to. Living alone in old age is therefore complicated.

legal considerations: Divorce later in life can be quite draining, as the couple must go through many legal aspects, such as updating wills, designation of beneficiaries, and powers of attorney to properly honor their wishes and ensure assets are protected.
