On this day, Lord Ganesha is worshipped along with the Moon God. The fast is considered to be over after offering Arghya to the Moon.

Gajanan Sankashti Chaturthi: History

The tradition of Gajanan Sankashti Chaturthi originates from Hindu mythology. Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is worshipped as the god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles. Goddess Parvati is said to have given birth to Ganesha from the turmeric paste she used to bathe with. When Lord Shiva did not recognise Ganesha, a fight broke out and Ganesha’s head was replaced with an elephant’s head as a sign of his unique divine presence.

Celebrating Sankashti Chaturthi has been around for centuries as a way to honor Lord Ganesha and seek his help from above to overcome challenges. In Hinduism, the month of Ashadha is considered a time of spiritual significance, making this day especially important.


Gajanan Sankashti Chaturthi: Significance

Hindus attach great religious significance to Sankashti Chaturthi. The name “Sankashti”, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, signifies overcoming difficulties. Devotees observe fast on this day to overcome inconveniences and problems, especially in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. With the belief that Lord Ganapati will fulfill their wishes if they observe the fast with devotion and pure intentions, many Ganapati devotees observe fast from morning to evening.

Lord Ganesha, known as Pratham Pujya or the first worshipped deity, is a must for any puja. If you don’t worship him first, the activities and rituals can be difficult. On the other hand, taking the name of Ganpati Ji before starting any work guarantees positive results.

Additionally, it is believed that married couples who do not have children should worship Lord Ganesha as he is believed to fulfill the deepest desires of his devotees.
