Amazon workers reject union in historic vote

It was described as a David versus Goliath battle, with the workers facing fierce resistance from the company.

The fight for union recognition began in the summer of 2022 with a fierce show of protest.

Amazon had offered workers a pay rise of 35 to 50 cents an hour. Workers who had worked in the warehouse during the Covid pandemic said this felt like an insult and a small group of angry workers in Coventry spontaneously walked out and protested outside the fulfilment centre.

The GMB then intervened and urged the workers to form a union.

In January 2023, with a GMB membership of just 50, Coventry workers First ever Amazon strike organised in UK,

It organised 37 days of industrial action last year and, through picketing, reached out to its membership to more than 1,400 of the centre’s estimated 3,000-plus workers.
