Google Doodle celebrates the anniversary of the 1829 patent of the accordion

Google Doodle celebrates the anniversary of the accordion being patented on May 23, 1829. The name of this instrument comes from the German word “Acord”, meaning chord.

The doodle pays tribute to the free-reed instrument with bellows. The accordion influences various musical genres such as jazz, pop, folk and classical. This versatile instrument left an indelible impact on the music industry.

Talking about the history of the accordion, Google Doodle mentions that in the late 1800s, manufacturers in Germany increased the production of accordions as its popularity was growing among folk musicians across Europe.

Initially, accordions came with buttons on only one side. However, each button makes the sound of an entire chord. Another impressive feature of this musical instrument is that it produces two strings from a single button; one when the bellows expand and the other when the bellows contract.

The Google Doodle also noted that as Europeans moved globally, the presence of the accordion in music also increased.

Google also noted that the instrument has gained popularity over the past few years and is played in various types of music such as Cajun music, folk music, and more.

Today, the instrument can be heard in folk music, tango, Cajun music, folk music, Latino polka, and others. One event in which the accordion is always present is Oktoberfest. This lively festival is filled with carnival music, fun and traditional costumes such as dirndl dresses and lederhosen.

The Google Doodle further states that when Melody Maker is at hand, “everything goes according to plan!” The traditional sound continues to influence German celebrations and music around the world 200 years later.

History of the accordion

The original form of the accordion is believed to have been invented by Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann in Berlin in 1822.

The earliest accordion history in Russia is poorly documented. Russian researchers claim that the first known simple accordions were made in 1830 by Ivan Sizov and Timofey Vorontsov in Tula, Russia. This instrument had already become popular by the late 1840s. The two masters’ factories were producing about 10,000 instruments a year. Numbers increased significantly during the year and by 1874, annual production exceeded 700,000.
