At least nine people killed after stage collapses during campaign rally in Mexico


At least nine people, including a child, were killed and more than 50 injured when a stage collapsed at an election campaign rally in Mexico’s northern Nuevo Leon state, the local governor has said.

The incident occurred as centre-left presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Mánez was delivering a speech in the town of San Pedro Garza García, near Monterrey.

Mr Menez was not injured in the accident, and was seen speaking to supporters after the incident. He said that many members of his team were injured.

Videos posted on social media showed Mr. Menez waving to his supporters and then running to safety as part of the structure collapsed.

State Governor Samuel Garcia urged local residents to stay indoors due to the storm and strong winds in the area.

“Avoid going outside if possible, as there are storms and unusual winds. I will keep you posted,” he wrote on X.

Reacting to news of the incident, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he was sending “condolences to the family members, friends and political supporters of the victims.”

Mr Menez is the candidate of the Citizens Movement Party and is currently trailing in third place in national polls.

The preparations for the elections to be held on June 2 have been the deadliest in the history of the country.

A recent survey conducted by Mexican political consulting firm Integlia He said nearly 200 public servants, politicians and candidates were killed or threatened before the election.
