988 texting feature sees increased usage

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – When you’re struggling with your mental health, having someone you can reach out to no matter what can make a world’s difference.

One resource for those struggling with mental health is the 988 hotline. Calling or texting it will connect you with mental health help. North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) Suicide Prevention Administrator Melissa Markegard said usage of the 988 line has increased notably ever since HHS added the ability to text the hotline a little over two years ago.

“It’s a great way to reach those individuals who may not be comfortable calling someone and talking about it, but if they can text someone, that might be a better option for them,” Markegard said.

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of self-harm, call or text the line. It’s available 24/7.
